Bound in the 19th century by Adolphe Bertrand in red morocco, triple gilt fillets to the front and back boards, spine with raised bands, finely-tooled gilt compartments, gilt inner-dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Printer’s device to title and wood-cut illustration of griffin to verso of final leaf; engraved initials throughout. Text block lightly tanned, overall a fine copy. Provenance: the Bibliotheque du Château des Rozais, with their book plate designed by Henry-André to front pastedown. The Château des Rozais Library was a prestigious private collection that belonged to the Pommery family, founded in 1908 in the Rilly-la-Montagne estate (Marne). Seemingly unrecorded issue of this edition. Sébastian Gryphe draws together the lovers and loves of Ovid’s poetical works. The collection begins with his Heroides and Double Heroides, a collation of twenty-one verse epistles from mythological heroines to their unfaithful or otherwise unsatisfactory lovers. The next work is the Amores, an elegiac love poem in three parts. This is followed by the famed ‘Ars Amatoria’ [Art of Love] in which Ovid instructs his audience in the various techniques and tricks of seduction. The Remedia Amoris [Love’s Remedy], which follows directly on, offers respite and healing to the ailing lover. Ovid’s letter to Livia, the wife of Augustus, mourns the death of her son Drusus on campaign in Germania and offers her advice on how best to carry herself and manage her grief. One of the last pieces in the catalogue is the Medicamina Faciei Femineae, Ovid’s appraisal of female beauty and the cosmetic methods of its improvement. Paired with its pretty Bertrand binding, at every glance a beautiful book.
