Twelve finely engraved plates depicting the stages of an eighteenth century bullfight, plus engraved illustrated title. Light rubbing to joints and corners; some very light foxing. Generally very good. Noseret’s famous engravings beautifully capture the energy and deadly elegance of a nineteenth century bullfight. The matador and the bull are central characters around whom scramble picadores, banderilleros, dogs, and jeering spectators. The entire process from the bull’s violent entrance in the first plate to his helpless removal in the twelfth is detailed, step by step. Noseret’s illustrations pay particular attention to the physical form of the bullfighters, carefully illustrating their movements and stances as well as the style of their hair, clothing, and equipment. This book is a fascinating insight into late nineteenth century tauromaquia and the art of bullfighting.
