Originally published in Dutch in four parts 1691-93. Balthasar Bekker (1634–98) was a German-Dutch clergyman, theologian and philosopher. Bekker casts doubt over the ideas of spirtual powers and diabolical possession, drawing on the philosophy of Descartes and Spinoza. He especially critizises the witch trials that plagued northern Europe at the time. His denial of the power of the devil on earth got him into trouble with the church, but his contribution played an important part in early enlightenment and in the ending of witchcraft persecutions.
