A remarkable survival: the first fascicle of ‘the monumental dictionary begun by Jakob Grimm in collaboration with his brother Wilhelm … Its sixteen volumes (32 bound in pairs) appeared from 1854 to 1960 (the instalments for the first volume began in 1852). Only the first four were completed at the time of Jakob Grimm’s death [in 1863; Wilhelm died in 1859]. It is the most comprehensive work of modern German lexicography and gives illustrations of usage together with etymological information. Its standing is equivalent to that of the Oxford English Dictionary’ (Oxford Companion to German Literature).
