Very fine dark red morocco, richly gilt spine with raised bands, boards with triple gilt borders and gilt fleurons in corners, richly inner gilt bordures, all edges gilt and with wrappers preserved (Noulhac, stamp-signed on inner front boards). Two volumes, in marbled box with morocco edges. Book plates of Armand Sibien Architect and of H. Grandjean.
One of 100 exemplaires ”de grand choix sur papier du Japon et velin du Marais”, this is number 49. With all the 63 illustrations, 21 on separate plates and 42 vignettes, doubled in two different states, one before letters and one after. They are made after Adolphe Lalauze and engraved by Léon Boisson. The French book binder Henri Adrien Noulhac (1866-1931) set up his workshop in Paris in 1894. Specialized initially in plain leather bindings (reliures jansenistes) and copies of 18th-century bindings. By 1900 he had begun to incorporate modest floral emblems into the dentelled fillet borders on his covers. Madame Campan or Jeanne-Louise-Henriette Genêt Campan (1752-1822) was one of Marie Antoinettes closest lady-in-waiting. She remained so up until the French revolution and the storming of the Tuileries Palace by the revolutionaries in 1792. She survived the terror although she lost all her material possessions but made comeback during Napoleon I as a superintendent of the academy at Écouen for the education of orphaned daughters of members of the Légion d'honneur in 1807. Her memoires were first published postumously in 1822.
