De Prony worked in the harbour of Dunkirk as an engineer, hydraulic engineer and French Encyclopedist before he was sent to Italy by Bonaparte to work in the ports of Genoa, Pola, Venice, and Ancona. He was responsible for draining the marshes of Poitiers and the Pontine Plains. Together with Monge he founded the Polytechnic, where he was co-chair of Mechanics with Lagrange.
