Three ladies by the window. (1764) The engraving “Three Ladies at the Window” shows a finely observed interior scene from 18th-century bourgeois life. Two elegantly dressed women are in a room by an open window. One lady is sitting on an upholstered chair, busy with needlework, while the other is sitting on the windowsill, looking outside. The depiction thrives on the careful rendering of the fabrics, furniture, and room details, especially the heavy curtains and window recess. With minimal means, Chodowiecki succeeds in capturing a calm, intimate everyday situation that simultaneously hints at curiosity and social observation.
