The two ladies seated. Miss Quantin and the wife of the artist. (1758) Chodowiecki’s many thousands of drawings and miniature engravings made him the greatest reporter of his time in Germany. He drew incessantly wherever he was, on the street, at receptions and balls, usually in such a way that the people portrayed did not notice. Chodowiecki created unique depictions of the customs and everyday life of his time and was subsequently commissioned to illustrate the works of many poets of his time. He was highly valued by his contemporaries. Johann Caspar Lavater described him as “the best and most sensitive illustrator I know.” Chodowiecki produced over 100 copperplate engravings for his “Physiognomic Fragments for the Promotion of Knowledge of Human Nature and Human Love,” published in 1774.
