Collection of 24 ink-drawn portrait silhouettes of fellow students, given to Edmund Schädelin, a theology student in Bern. Each portrait with a ms. dedication of two to three lines. C. 12 x 9 cm. Loosely inserted between contemp. half leather boards.
Album amicorum of theology student Carl Ferdinand Edmund Schädelin (b. 1839), father of Albert Schädelin (1879–1961), pastor at Bern Münster, and grandfather of Klaus Schädelin (1918–1987), pastor and author of the famous Swiss young adult novel „Mein Name ist Eugen“. Among the dedications are names such as Rolf Walthard, Alf. Schauffelberger, Louis Patel, Adolf Walthard, Gustav König, Jakob Rutsch, Fritz Ries, Armin Bachmann, Albert Lüscher, Fritz Ris, C. Frauchiger, A. Schorer, A. Mutter, and F. Bauer. Two of the 24 cards are dedicated to “Falk,” presumably Schädelin’s nickname. Also included is a portrait photograph of a “Salz” from Leipzig, likely a fellow German student who, according to a handwritten note on the silhouette of his portrait, returned to his hometown in August 1860. – All of the cards have perforations on the top edge, suggesting they were previously hung.
