Very rare German translation by the lawyer, professor of natural history at the University of Mainz and advisor to the government, Johann Fibig (1756 - 1792) and the professor of natural history and statistics at the University of Mainz and conservator of the mineralogical collection at Munich, Bernhard Sebastian von Nau (1766 - 1845) of the French mineralogist Louis Charles Henri Macquart’s (1745 - 1808) Essais ou recueil de memoires sur plusieurs points de minéralogie (1789), an original description of various mineralogical aspects of the Russian empire. Macquart was a professor of natural history at the Central School of Seine - et - Marne, who later served as curator and conservator of the collections at Fontainebleau. This work is divided into eight essays, the topics of which are as follows: (1) chalcedony pseudomorphs after gypsum found in Poland. (2) The celebrated and ancient salt mine at Wieliczka, Poland. (3) Description of a gold mine at Beres of Siberia. (4) An account of a mine in Siberia where the mineral crocoite is found. (5) A chemical analysis of the mineral crocoite (6) Description of copper mines in Siberia. (7) The iron mines of that area. (8) Analysis of the mineral cerussite, from specimens found at Nerchinsky, Siberia. Also included in this last memoir is a curious topographical description of the city of Moscow and its surroundings. „The eight memoirs comprising the text are based on the author’s travel experiences in the Urals, Siberia, the vicinity of Moscow, and Poland. … The eighth memoir is gemologically the most important.“ (Sinkankas).- Cat.
