Folio (405 x 238 cm) xvi, 686 pp., [2] pp., engraved frontispiece and title-page vignette by Burghers, errata leaf to rear, Greek and Latin text in parallel columns, woodblock diagrams throughout. Contemporary panelled calf, chip to head of spine and to corner of label.
First edition thus, one of 250 large-paper copies from the total edition of 750, published as part of Oxford’s attempt, first proposed in 1672, to publish the complete works of the ancient Greek and Latin Mathematicians in the original language, in a series projected to comprise 21 volumes. This being the copy of the eminent Scottish mathematician James Stirling (1692 - 1770) who also proved the correctness of Isaac Newton’s classification of cubic plane curves. Until Heiberg and Menge’s edition was published in the late 19th cent., this was the only complete edition of the Greek text, based on the Basel edition annotated by Sir Henry Savile, who also made use of certain manuscripts, now amongst the Savilian manuscripts in the Bodleian Library. The Latin version is largely that of Commandino with certain improvements and corrections stemming from Edward Bernard (1638 1696), who had been Savilian Professor.- Carter, A History of the Oxford University Press, vol.
