Slightly concave boards with small stains. Minor pencil scribbles on the inside of the boards, where pastedowns partly have come loose along the margins. Endpapers with dampstaining. Title page with a small tear in upper margin. A few isolated foxing and rust stains, and pp. 13-14 with a minimal paper loss to outer margin. The first plate with a tear along the fold. VD17 12:654152G. The first edition was published in 1633. Several of the plates contain multiple numbered illustrations on the same sheet. With printed dedication to Alexander Ramsay from Mattheus Merian, dated 1633. A work on the marching formations and order of battle of the Swedish army. The Swedish system of combining cavalry and infantry musketeers with light field artillery contributed to the increased mobility and striking power of the infantry. The commonly employed caracole tactic, used by cavalry in virtually all European armies, involved successive ranks of horsemen advancing toward the enemy, discharging their pistols at close range, then wheeling away along the flanks of the following ranks before reforming at the rear of the formation. During this maneuver the riders reloaded their pistols so that they were ready to fire again upon reaching the front. Gustavus Adolphus modified this tactic by having his cavalry draw their swords and charge the enemy directly while the musketeers reloaded.
