Worn contemporary marbled calf with raised bands, richly gilt-decorated spine, dark red morocco label, gilt board edges, and speckled edges. Front free endpaper removed. Rather soiled and stained from heavy use, especially towards the end. A three cm tear in the outer margin of the title page. The final leaf with a paper loss to the upper margin. Various ink scribbles on the pastedowns. The final blank bears an early manuscript note stating, among other things, that this book is now the best in this genre. Ownership inscriptions ”A. Horn” on the front pastedown and ”v. Rosenstein” on the title page. From Ericsberg.
The first edition was probably published in 1685; this is the fifth edition. L’hombre is a classic card game for three players, originating in Spain and spreading throughout Europe at the end of the 17th century. It is a trick-taking game with bidding. The term l’hombre refers to the player who leads the game. The copy may possibly have belonged to Adam Horn.
