[Views of buildings in Berlin, Potsdam and other German cities]. (Berlin, 1773?). Oblong folio, 25.5 x 41 cm. 66 engraved plates. Worn contemporary grey paper boards. Red-sprinkled edges. Light foxing and staining to margins, occasionally heavier. A few plates with negligible foxing in the picture area. The first plate with a tear extending from the lower margin, stopping just short of the caption beneath the image. Plate 30 has a tiny paper loss at the lower outer corner and a somewhat unevenly trimmed lower edge. Split in the inner margin between plates 33 and 34, with a few small stains in that area. Plate 46 with a small tear in the lower margin and a somewhat unevenly trimmed lower edge. Front cover with contemporary ink shelf number ”17”. An old stamp in the outer margin of first plate. The verso of the first plate bears Jacob De la Gardie’s engraved armorial bookplate. The first plate also bears his stamped shelfmark, ”Q. 1.”, in the upper margin, as well as the ink inscription ”Tom 2. pag 607” in the lower margin. Front pastedown with the Charlottenlund bookplate.
Katalog der Ornamentstichsammlung Berlin mentions only a copy with 21 of the plates. This copy contains 66 of the 68 published plates, lacking only the final two (i.e. plates 67 and 68). A very rare and extensive copy of these plates, which is rarely encountered complete. Plates 1–6, 8–11, and 13 are signed in the plate. The plates depict numerous prominent buildings in Berlin, including St.-Hedwigs-Kathedrale, Königliche Oper, Palais des Prinzen Heinrich, Königliches Schloss, Zeughaus, Kronprinzenpalais and Schloss Charlottenburg. The collection also includes views from a number of other German cities, notably a substantial group depicting Potsdam, with Schloss Sanssouci. The engraver Johann David Schleuen (1711–1771) is best known for his views of Berlin and Potsdam. The plates were produced by Schleuen together with his son Johann Wilhelm Schleuen, who continued the work after his father’s death in 1771 and supervised the publication of the plates from 1773.
