True first edtion: As there were three different issues of this work issued in the same year, they can only be distinguished by the flower bowl vignette to the titleleaf, having the list of subscribers before the foreword, and having 170 pages instead of 162 pages - all three points are present in this lovely copy. ** Philidor [1726-95] was the most important (and best) chess player of his time. This is his main work on chess, which became the authoritative chess bible for a hundred years.
