Manuscript - Squieres Tale from Canterbury Tales. / Handwritten manuscript, 76 pages on thick paper. 8vo [23 x 16 cm]. Text and line ornamentations in red, blue and black ink; illuminations in colours, adorned with leaf of gold. With handwritten colophone to th e back: 'Designed, illuminated and lettered for the owner by Kenneth Hughes at London 1944 A.D.'. Bound untrimmed in a nice full morocco binding with raised bands and gold borders to the inner- and outer boards. Small stain to the upper board.
Amazing pastiche manuscript: During World War II. Chaucer text in Middle English language has been made to shine like seldom before with loads of innovative coloured initials, lovely full page title and endleaves, and incredible creative doodles to all the leaves, made as a medieval manuscript. Sadly we have not been able to find out more about the Kenneth Hughes that has spent numerous hours on this An astonishing piece of book art.
