Douze Sonnets lascifs pour accompagner la suite d'aquarelles intitulée Les Délassements d'Eros / Érotoplois a l'Ensigne du Faune, Paris 1925. First edition. 4to. 37 pages including 12 prints in colour. All laid loosely in original boards with spine in light, fine cloth. Two sets of tilk ties, top and bottom of boards are present but in tatters. Third set of ties missing. The light exterior a little grubby and with old staining to rear board along foreedge. Mild, uneven browning to inside boards with pastedown paper minutely nicked at ends of spine. Prints and paper in near fine condition.
Beautifully printed with lavish use of paper - still the playful prints overshadow it all. Designed in a style characteristic for the period, the artwork is executed with joy and a light, elegant hand. Often almost ornamental in concept the plates complete in their own right - and they were in fact previously published (1917) without text. ** Danish artist Gerda Wegener [1885-1940] is an international LGBT+ icon, pushing the bounderies of sex and gender. After getting married to Danish painter Eigil Wegener [1882-1931], the couple realised that Eigil was more female than male, and he (soon she) was among the first ever to have a gender affirming surgery and assumed the name Lili Elbe. Gerda Wegener herself painted and printed rather explicit lesbian scenes, of which this folder is the first exhibit. Lili Elbe was often the model for the scenes.
