Engraved frontispiece,(2),XII,629 pp. & 1 folded engraved map & 6 engraved plates + Engraved frontispiece,(2),VIII,588 pp. & 1 folded engraved map & 6 engraved plates. Title pages printed in red and black and with engraved vignettes. Two handsome contemporary calf volumes with raised bands and beige title labels. Boards decorated in varying shades of leather. Sprinkled edges. Spines lightly faded and worn. Boards with minor wear and some small stains. A few stains internally, for example some light dampstains in the upper magin. The map in volume 1 with a small tear in one of the folds. Included is a small bookmarker with a woodcut of a rooster and the printed text ”Virginia tobacco, London” from an 18th century tobacco company.On the insides of the front boards the old numbering ”423” and ink initials ”D.G.H.” Nice copy, from Ericsberg.
Cohen Livres à gravure du XVIIIe siècle 404. Ullrich Robinson und Robinsonaden 6. Gumuchian Les livres de l’enfance 4793: ”Un des plus beaux livres de voyages à figures du XVIIIe siècle”. Part III, which was published in 1721 is missing here. It has a completely different title: ”Reflexions serieuses et importantes de Robinson Crusoe, faites pendant les avantures surprenantes de sa vie. Avec sa vision du monde angelique”, but is considered to be ”Tome troisieme” and is a part of the set. First French edition. The English originals of the first two parts had been published in 1719, and a new French edition of them was published already in 1721. Part I with the subtitle: ”Contenant entre autres évenemens le séjour qu’il a fait pendant vingt & huit ans dans une isle désérté, située sur la côte de l’Amérique, prés l’embouchure de la grande Rivière Oronoque” and part II: ”Contenant son retour dans son isle, & ses autres nouveaux voyages”. The plates are engraved by Bernard Picart, who, however, only has signed the first frontispiece and the title vignettes. The two world maps are identical. Translated by Thémiseul de Saint-Hyacynthe and Justus van Effen. The owner’s initials are probably those of David Gotthard Hildebrand (1761-1808) after whom Ericsberg castle was inherited by the Bonde family.
