[14]+184+(56) + (16)+78+(2) pages [complete, apart from the first blank leaf]. Bound in a half calf binding [late 18th century?]. Slight edgewear and a chip to the top of the spine. Old name to the first titleleaf. A few notes here and there in old ink. Notes to the two last blank inserted leaves and to the verso of the printer's device. One quiafe with dampstaining (most likely from the printer's house).
Two very scarce first editions by the highly acclaimed Dutch orientalist and ohilologist Thomas van Erpe [1584-1624]. Having studied Arabic, Turkish, Persic and Ethiopic at various universities throughtout Europe, he became professor of Arabic and Oriental languages at the university of Leiden. At his own expense he established a printing press with Arabic characters, and published the first Arabian grammar in the Western world in 1613, and these two works continue the groundbreaking work, that was reprinted several times, as it became the stand works on Arabic throughout Europe. Sadly, he died prematurely as at only 40.
