VOC notebook Rotterdam ca 1750 with 4 silver clasps

Rare VOC notebook with silver clasps (4) showing VOCR for VOC chamber of Rotterdam, and silver shields (2) with a Dutch VOC ship. With original pencil / stylus (with silver mark) that closes the binding. Notebook with later manuscript notes, some dated 1910, some 1918, further undated. In the back a secret compartment made of decorated paper and cloth (the cloth with severe wear). Black shark skin leather binding (“Segrijn”), 13,5 x 7,8 cm. Silver without traceable silver marks. Also blank pages.

Pars prior continens genealogicis tabellis comprehensas familias invictissimorum imperatorum (…), Magdenburg, Kirchner, 1598, (10)+634 pp. Important Renaissance genealogical reference by Hieronymus Henninges, published in 1598 and later placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum (Index of Forbidden Books). Richly illustrated with hundreds of woodcut genealogical tables, it traces the dynasties of the Holy Roman Empire and Western Europe, including the Counts of Holland and the noble houses of Brederode and Teylingen, making it a fundamental source for the study of medieval and early modern aristocratic genealogy.

Nach rechter vollkommener art vnvd (! vnnd) Beschreibungen der Alten, besstberümpten ärzt, vormals in Teutscher sprach, der masszen nye gesehen, noch in Truck auszgangen… Newlich beschriben.- Strassburg, Hans Schotten [Johann Schott] 1532. Folio (330 x 210 mm). [32], I - CCCXXII, [2], [14] pp. with 176, mostly, full-page woodcuts, initials, and one coat-of-arms of Strasbourg, all in contemporary hand-coloring. Contemporary calf binding over wooden boards with plate and roller stamps, corner fittings, and two clasps. The binding features numerous portraits of rulers as well as allegorical depictions, extensively monogrammed „HB.”, dated 1534. Spine repaired, partially slightly stained, a few pages with old repairs, otherwise a nice copy.

WO II Forbidden book 1933 | Das Vaterland. Ein Tatsachen Roman aus dem heutigen Deutschland, P.N. van Kampen Amsterdam 1933, 295 pp. Text in German. With original dustwrapper and the rare promotional belly band. One of the earliest German-language exile novels and one of the first literary eyewitness accounts of Nazi Germany, published in Amsterdam only months after Hitler’s rise to power. Heinz Liepman’s documentary novel describes (in 1933 !) the rapid transformation of Hamburg through political terror, antisemitism, SA violence and the establishment of the first concentration camps. Original linen hardcover binding with some water damage, especially on and near the spine. 19,5 x 12 cm. With original dustwrapper with its striking barbed-wire motif and swastika. Dustwrpapper with damages, and some missing paper. With the rare publisher’s promotional book band (buikbandje): Ein tatsachenroman aus dem heutigen Deutschland. Fúr die Wahrheit aller Mitteilungen des Buches, der entsetzlichsten und menschliche ungeheuerlichsten Geschehnisse steht Heinz Leipmann mit seiner Person ein. And in red printed letters in handwritten style: Den in Hitler Deutschland ermordeten Juden gewidmet. Dedicated to the Jews murdered in Hitler’s Germany. This wording is remarkable because the novel was published as early as 1933 and thus provided exceptionally early testimony to the deadly nature of the National Socialist persecution of the Jews.

(Europa/Japan) (Workshop of) Kawahara Keiga (1786 – c.1860), attrib.

Flora et Fauna du Japon (gilt printed title on spine). Late Edo period album of natural history drawings in a mid 19th cent. European half calf binding incl. first 101 drawings of flowers, and than 101 drawings of cats & bats, amphibians, fish, shells, and insects.- Japan (Nagasaki ?), 1833 - not later then 1850. small 4to. (195 x 155 mm). Album containing 202 watercolor drawings (mostly one on each page) with Japanese manuscript captions, on thin laid (japanese ?) paper without watermark. The sheets are mostly unsigned, yet can be attributed to the Kawahara Keiga workshop. European red half calf binding (ca. 1850 - 1865) with gilt title on spine, rubbed and soiled. The binding is slightly later then the Ex Libris by Baumann (before 1850). The binder has bound the flower part in European style (each drawing facing a blank), while the animal part was bound like the original Japanese binding (two drawing facing each other). The last plate (Pfingstrose; Botan) is bound out of order and should be at the front. The drawings generally very well preserved, with occasional light spotting and minor toning, colors fresh.

Aus der Sammlung eines ehemaligen Mitarbeiters der Firma Rosenthal/Selb, der mit den Künstlern, die für die Firma arbeiteten, auch befreundet war und von ihnen Arbeiten erwarb oder geschenkt bekam. Vorhanden sind: I. Zwei Dekor-Entwürfe für eine Teekanne bzw. eine Kaffeekanne auf einem Karton. Feder und Blei. In Blei vom Künstler signiert und datiert April (19)67. 31 x 18 cm. Unter der Darstellung (von anderer Hand) als “Ka. Kanne” und “T. Kanne” bezeichnet. Typische Peynet-Motive mit schnäbelndem Vogelpaar in dichter Baumkrone. Links neben der Darstellung zwei Bleistiftskizzen der Kanne als Silhouette mit Skizze der Plazierung des Dekors, evtl. von anderer Hand. II. Zwei zusammengehörige farbige bildliche Darstellungen für Porzellan (Teller ? Platte ?). Auf einem Karton. Feder und Aquarell. Eine mit Feder vom Künstler signiert. Wohl 1960er Jahre. 26,5 x 20 cm. Links neben der Darstellung mit Bleistift-Marginalie “nicht verkleinern” bzw. “verkleinern” von anderer Hand. Typische, leicht karikierende Peynet-Figuren: zum einen ein älterer Mann, aus dem Gebüsch mit Fernrohr beobachtend, zum anderen eine nackte junge Frau amWasser, sicher die beobachtete.
